Last night, just a few minutes before midnight, I finished my first ever second draft. Well, secondish draft. There are still great big plot holes and places that say something like ADD MORE HERE and [FILLER] and a character or two that disappears and subplots with no middle, BUT I DID A REWRITE FROM BEGINNING TO END, AND I DON'T FEEL LIKE STRANGLING ANYONE! Last time I tried a second draft (with my first novel) I hated doing it and gave up and wanted to strangle all my characters. Even though this draft is still a huge holey mess, it's still more editing than I've ever done on a story before. And this calls for celebration. Brownies for all!
In other news, today is October first (in case you didn't remember the date or just came out of a time travel experiment and don't know when you are) which means it's time to start planning for NaNoWriMo. *Squeals of delight* Not entirely sure what I'll be working on this year, but the current top idea/concept is a paranormal... something, involving amputees.
As a reward for slogging through this entirely boring post, I give you Plot Device, a cool short film that someone told me about.
And thus ends my brief return to the blogosphere. I shall disappear again now. A lovely day/night/tea-time/whatever to you.
Congrats on finishing your second draft, Lily! I'm thinking I'll attempt NaNo this year, but it'll be my first time participating. Any suggestions? :)

Thank you!
DeleteSuggestions. Hmm. I'm still figuring it out myself, but I'd say do some planning ahead of time, don't worry about the quality of your words, and have fun. Not sure that'll help you at all, but those are things I'm keeping in mind. :)
Congrats, Lily! Way to go on finishing your second draft! I can't wait for NaNo either. I just realized it was a month away. This time two months from now, we will both hopefully have 50K more written.

DeleteYay, Lily!!!
ReplyDeleteYep, NaNo is a month away. I'm looking forward to it, but right now, I have editing of my own to plow through. I'd like to be done with this draft by NaNo, but I doubt that'll happen.
Paranormal amputation? Oh my. :)
Congratulations!!!

I just watched that video! OH MY GOODNESS! That was great!

Glad you liked it!
DeleteThanks! I'm hoping to do a lot of beta reading before NaNo, so I can get to The Curse Fulfilled.
Yep, paranormal amputees. Sorta. It's just a premise right now, but I'll develop it. (It was partly inspired by Dark Waltz, by the way. It happened to be going through my head when I was thinking about ghost pain and BAM, new idea.) Though now I'm thinking of writing a bunch of short stories instead of a novel. Yay for NaNo Rebels!
Huh... my NaNo is inspired by Dark Waltz... and it's going to end up a romance if I can't figure out a main plot.
DeleteGreat! Just let me know when you can read it.
~RH
What a coincidence, my idea lacks a main plot as well! Why is it the plot bunnies run when you need them? Perhaps we should go on a plot bunny hunt. Or are main plots more along the lines of a plot unicorn? Plot ostrich? Platypus? Phoenix?
DeleteNope, still bunnies. Occasionally rabbits, hares, or even jackalopes, though. Yes! Let us go catch plot jackalopes! *slings on backpack, grabs carrots out of the fridge for bait* Come on, Tempest! We're going jackalope hunting!

Woo hoo! Plot Jackalope hunt! *Grabs live traps, jackalope carriers, and a notebook of partial story ideas. Looks through writing arsenal and realizes she's never created any cool animal companions. Briefly considers bringing a graffiti artist, but decides against it.* All right, let's go!
ReplyDeleteOoh... I like that graffiti artist... but I'm not sure how he'd be much help on our quest.
DeleteTempest, grab my notebook! And bring my fountain pen, too!
(Tempest didn't start out as my companion. He started out a character going along with four children on their quest. Kind of a Gandalf.)

Yes, as wonderfully quirky as my dear graffiti artist is, he wouldn't know what to do with a plot jackalope. Leave him alone with one and he'd paint it bright colors. *Follows you into the Wilderness of Insanity.*
