Characters in Costume - Vorsilla Silverbeetle

Gillian from Of Battles, Dragons, and Swords of Adamant hosts a Characters in Costume blog event every month, in which you dress up as one of your characters, and I thought I'd participate this time (though I'm actually two days late in posting this, which is kinda ironic since Gillian did a post on Go Teen Writers last week called "Procrastination Doesn't Pay.") This month's theme is villains.

So, allow me to introduce you to a minor antagonist from my work-in-progress Noxumbra Manor: Vorsilla Silverbeetle.

I look nothing like Silla, and that setting is all wrong (I wanted to go to the local cemetery and take pictures there, but I ran out of time), but I think she would wear that dress.

Silla doesn't play that much of a part in the current draft of Noxumbra Manor (something I intend to change), but when I worked on figuring out who she was, I grew to really like her, and I've decided to make her the protagonist of the sequel, which has no title or plot yet.

Her mother died in childbirth, and her father had wanted a boy, an heir to his estate. As a result, Silla grew up in the shadow of male cousins and other relatives, watching them get praised, while her accomplishments were ignored. This left her as bitter and frosty as a winter's wind.

Then I went and broke her heart. And she was set on revenge. Thus began her role as an antagonist.

If you want to see what Silla looks like in my head, click here for a nearly perfect likeness I found on Pinterest. And you can find my Noxumbra Manor Pinterest board here.

And in case you were wondering, I've Seen Hell from the North & South soundtrack is her theme song.

Be sure to check out the other Characters in Costume participants! There's a list here on Gillian's blog.

And a good night/day/morning/evening/whatever to you.

  1. Poor Silla, growing up in the shadow of her cousins... :(

I love the fabric on that overskirt! And your picture turned out lovely, even though you didn't have time to make it to the cemetery.

    1. Thanks! I made that dress to wear to a reenactment, and that fabric was some home decor stuff that fit the time period fairly well. :)

  2. I like her name-- Vorsilla. It has a nobleness to it; you know she's nobility.

I like your cloak, too. I need a cloak. I need to go raid some store right after Halloween and get a cloak. :)

    1. Thanks. My mom hates the name Vorsilla, so I'm glad you said that.

Yes, every writer needs a good cloak. We must be able to sweep into rooms with finesse worthy of our evil plots.

    2. Must get a cloak. Something noble. Where did you get your's?

    3. My mom made it. We had yards and yards and yards of that grey wool, so she made my sister and I cloaks. Sadly that doesn't help you.

    4. Yeah... no yards and yards of grey wool here. If I had the patience in yarn, I could knit myself a cloak.
      Is your dress homemade, too?

    5. It is, indeed. I made it myself. My sister, best friend, and I made dresses to wear to a reenactment a couple of years ago. That photo was actually taken last year at said reenactment. I think. There's a photo of the three of us here, if you want to see, though you'd have to scroll down a bit: http://rurification.blogspot.com/2011/10/rural-indiana-circa-1750.html

    6. I thought the dress looked homemade. :)
I didn't realize that the brown material was part of the dress until I saw the picture from the link! I thought it was the cloak lining. It's a pretty dress.
I need to get myself some costumes...

    7. Good eye! And thanks!
Though that would have been a really cool cloak lining...
I do admit, costumes are fun. The summer before we made these dresses we made Jane Austen style dresses. And just a heads up: that is NOT a pattern you want to start out with when you're a novice seamstress.
Thrift stores sometimes have good costumes/costume makings.

  3. Mmmm ... so the girl you're stealing Joan's pictures for is a villainess? Interesting. (I just stumbled upon her identity, though, and thought you'd be interested. Her name's Nina Dobrev)

    1. Thank you for telling me! I found three different pictures of her on Pinterest, and I wondered who she was. Figures that she's an actress.

Sorry to sounds silly, but who is Joan?

    2. I just IM'd her, and the photos I found were from the Vampire Diaries. I was sort os hoping they'd be from a period drama. And I saw some other pictures I'd pinned of her to be a look-alike for another character. So, when Miss Dobrev is smiling, she looks like Bev, and when she's frowning, she looks like Silla. Go figure :)

  4. Joan is a minor character in book two of the Bookania Quests (and a major in book 3), I've only mentioned her a few times on my blog, but you stole her picture on Pinterest. She's a princess who likes to design clothing.

    1. Oh, that's funny! I think I found that picture before I found you on Pinterest, but I think I did Pin some other pictures of her from you. Yes, I remember seeing Joan in your Bookania Quests board. I'm looking forward to book 2!

A clothes-designing princess and a frosty lady. *Shakes head and giggles* That's just too funny.

    2. If you're interested and willing to review it, email me (my email is on my FAQ page of my blog) and I'll send you the PDF that's going into the print version.

And I agree. The many ways that different people can interpret different pictures.

    3. I will keep that in mind, thanks!! I'm too busy right now, but I would really like to do that in the future. Would you need a review by a specific time?

    4. No hurry, but I will be holding a blog party on the twelfth of June (R&R's birthday, and the day I plan to release the print version) and blog reviews of my book posted that day will be one way to earn points for the giveaway.
