Teens Can Write, Too! May Blog Chain

Today is my turn to post for the Teens Can Write, Too! May blog chain.  In case you couldn't figure that out from the title of this post.

This month's prompt is "Why do you write?"

Hmm.  This one's a toughie.

I write because I love it.  And because my head would probably explode from idea overload if I didn't write my ideas down.  Mostly because I love it.

When I was little, being a published author was one of the first things I wanted to be, if memory serves me correctly.  I think it was the first Harry Potter book that inspired me to be an author.  Did I write anything back then? No. I dreamed up story ideas, told them to my sister as bedtime stories, but nothing ever really made it onto paper or a Word doc.  The first story I started writing I actually created as an attempt to get out of writing a book report when I was twelve(ish). Mom didn't go for it.  (For those of you who don't know and didn't read my bio, I'm homeschooled.  This means my homework is somewhat negotiable.  Be jealous.)  Even though that didn't work, I kept writing the story.  I'm not sure what motivated me.  Then my mom turned finishing it into homework, and thus the very first version of Lizzie Evans and the Black Cat Diamond was born.  I wrote the sequel between January of 2010 and July of last year, and rewrote the Black Cat Diamond for NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month.  Known to the rest of humanity as November) last year.  NaNoWriMo is what turned writing into a necessary bodily function for me.  I negotiated for less homework during the month of November, and wrote from lunch to dinner all month. It. Was. Heaven.  I wish every month was November. I've been thinking about writing a parody on Taylor Swift's song "Back to December", and changing it to "Back to November."

I think that's all I've got to say for this post, other than "be sure to check out the rest of the blog chain!", and "did anyone else catch the Doctor Who references in Inheritance by Christopher Paolini?" I think there was one in Brisingr too.  That has nothing to do with this post, but I was curious.

(Sorry about the white background again.  I don't know what the deal is.)

  1. Pretty good post. I don't know what it is, but my mom has refused to let me have unlimited writing time (aka, computer time) and call it homework. Ah, well, you can't have everything.
I didn't notice any Dr. Who references in Inheritance Cycle, but I still haven't exactly figured out more than a few things about Dr. Who. (Have you been rereading the Inheritance Cycle? Already?)

    1. Thanks! I'm glad it made it to "pretty good". I didn't think it was all that good.
Yeah, I can only count writing time as homework. Plain old computer time has been dubbed as "chilling out".
No, I'm not rereading it. I just noticed two references when I read Inheritance the first time and when I reread Brisingr last summer, and wondered if anyone else noticed them. The references were when Sloembum made a comment about rooms that are bigger on the inside than on the outside (like the TARDIS), and when Eragon asks Angela what the runes on the scarf/hat/whatever it was she was knitting say, and she says "Raxacor-oh, never mind". If I'm not mistaken, they were "Raxacoricofallapatorius" which is a planet from Doctor Who.

    2. Yeah, well, though I mostly am writing when on the computer, even that is restricted.
Ah. I won't pretend to know what exactly you're talking about, but it seems that it revolves around Angela and Solembum.

  2. Awesome post!
I like how you pointed out that NaNoWriMo is just November for regular people.

  4. Wait, DW references in the Inheritance Cycle? Enlighten me, I cannot be bothered to reread them. I only just made it through the first time. Probably why I wasn't paying enough attention to notice, since I'm usually the first to pick up on any DW references.

I am DEFINITELY jealous. Writing from lunch until dinner? That does sound like heaven. I got through NaNoWriMo by writing in my 45 minute lunch break at school, and for about half an hour in the evenings after I ought to have gone to bed. And that was all I got. It was very sad :( To have a solid hour - multiple solid hours! - would be bliss.

    1. Okay, the Doctor Who references are as follows:
      For Inheritance:
On page 389 (in the chapter titled "Questions Unanswered") Solembum comments on seeing "Rooms that are bigger on the inside than the outside". I took that as a reference to the TARDIS.
On page 814 (chapter called "Blood Price"), Angela is knitting a hat, and when Eragon asks what the runes on it mean she says: "Raxacori--oh, never mind." Which I took as a reference to the planet of the Slitheen, Raxacoricofallapatorius.

For Brisingr, there's a scene at the beginning where Eragon and Arya are sitting around a camp fire, and Arya absentmindedly writes something about "the lonely god" in the dirt. I didn't get that it was a DW reference until I read the acknowledgements, where CP says it is.
